Time Out Market Lisboa
The city's nineteenth-century market hall, half of it now a curated food court.
Half of the old Mercado da Ribeira still works as a produce market in the mornings. The other half was turned into a hall of counters run by named Lisbon chefs and producers, seated at long communal tables in the middle. It is unapologetically a visitor destination, and it is also genuinely good — which are not usually the same sentence.
Go at an odd hour. At one o'clock on a Saturday you will spend twenty minutes circling for a seat with a tray in your hands. At half past three on a Tuesday the same room is calm and you can actually eat several small things from several counters, which is the only sensible way to use the place.
