Villa Borghese gardens
Eighty hectares of umbrella pines above the centre, with a terrace over Piazza del Popolo.
Rome's large central park, landscaped from the Borghese family's seventeenth-century estate and opened to the public in 1903. It holds the Galleria Borghese, a lake with rowing boats, a replica Globe Theatre, and a great many umbrella pines, which are the trees that make Roman skylines look like Roman skylines.
The practical reason to come, beyond the gallery, is the Pincio terrace at the southern edge. It looks straight down over Piazza del Popolo and across the city, and it is a five-minute walk from the top of the Spanish Steps.
