Plaza del Dos de Mayo
The square Malasaña is organised around, and the clearest picture of how this city uses an evening.
A brick arch, a statue of two artillery officers, a playground, and several hundred people sitting on the ground. Dos de Mayo is not a sight — it is the default meeting point for a whole generation of Madrid, and on any warm evening it fills with people who did not make a plan and did not need one.
Terraces line three sides if you want a table. Most people do not bother. The neighbourhood's street party at the start of May takes the same square and makes it ten times busier.
